What are the Best Tourist Traps in New York State? Our Top 5

Is the Rockefeller Center Observation Deck in midtown Manhattan really the best ‘tourist trap’ in New York State? That’s what Huffington Post Travel said recently. We beg to differ. Here are our choices for the top 5 tourist ‘traps’ in the Empire State.

Jell-O Museum

Located between Rochester and Buffalo in Western New York, LeRoy is the home of JELL-O and a museum honors its squiggly, wiggly goodness. What says tourist trap more than a museum dedicated to JELL-O?

Herkimer Diamond Mines

Hekrimer and Middleville

Found only in Herkimer County in Central New York are Herkimer diamonds. The stones are quartz in actuality, but they resemble their much more expense cousin. There are a few diamond mines open to the public.

Maid of the Mist

Niagara Falls

You could choose just about anything falls related to be a tourist trap in the Niagara region. The Maid of the Mist boat ride is about as iconic as it gets.
Close second: Cave of the Winds.

Binghamton Carousels

Binghamton is known as the carousel capitol of the world with six antique carousels in the area – the largest concentration of them in one place. Bonus tip: look closely at the Leatherstocking Region tourism licence plate from the NYSDMV and you’ll see carousel horses in honor of this Southern Tier tradition.

National Baseball Hall of Fame

No list of New York State tourist attractions is complete unless we mention the Baseball Hall of Fame tucked away in the village of Cooperstown. Bonus tip if you visit: the Susquehanna River rises in Cooperstown. The river eventually becomes Chesapeake Bay.
