How Does Legal Rec Pot in Massachusetts Affect Us?
Massachusetts just voted to make recreational use of pot legal. Since we border Massachusetts, how does this affect New York?
Recreational pot is still not legal in New York State, but medical marijuana just passed in 2014 after years of holding out on it. Medical and recreational are two different issues. The big concern for New York is that people are going to cross the border to buy it or get stoned in the Berkshires and drive back to New York.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that Recreational Pot shops won’t be able to start selling weed until 2018. However, now that it will be legal in Massachusetts, does that force New York State to follow suit?
“It forces electeds to consider certain marijuana-related policies that they could have just avoided for awhile,” said Chris Alexander, policy coordinator for New York office of the Drug Policy Alliance.
This cuts to the heart of the legal recreational pot issue. If it is legal in some states and not others, you know people are going to drive over the border to buy it and use it. Some would say it should just be legal everywhere and avoid years of flip flopping only to give in at the end.
What do you think about this? Is legal recreational pot in Massachusetts a problem for New York? Do you think it will encourage lots of locals to drive over the border to buy it? Please leave you comments on our Facebook page.
